The ANATUM staff have tested most of the GIS apps available for iOS and used a few of them for two seasons of field surveys. At this point, we have a good idea of the most beneficial features for field surveyors. We are often asked by friends, acquaintances, and clients, which app we think is the best. Well, the easy answer is that there isn’t one.
All the GIS apps and software out there for iOS have some great features, but none of them have all the best features for every type of field survey under the sun. It is also unlikely that there will ever be a best “do everything” app because field surveys vary so greatly between engineering, environmental, construction, and so on. Each type of survey has different needs, thus it comes down to deciding on the most important aspects of your field job and then settling on the GIS app that best supports those necessary functions.
To this end, we have reached out to many of the GIS app software companies and asked them to answer a list of questions pertinent to many types of environmental field surveyors. Over the next few weeks, we will share our interviews with these GIS apps software groups in hopes that it can help professional surveyors narrow their list of possible software solutions. Of course, the ANATUM staff is always here to help and share our insights and experiences.
