Today we interviewed Geospago about their mobil GIS app.
Geospago makes a GIS app solution that provides secure automatic syncing, data imports, and offline base maps.
Geospago: Geospago is a software-as-a-service solution designed to make mobile mapping and field data collection easy. Using an Android or iOS smartphone or tablet, users can collect GIS-ready spatial data (points, lines, and polygons) plus rich tabular information based on data collection forms designed by users themselves using the Geospago web application.
Geospago’s pricing model is per user license and provides an easy interface for adjusting the number of licenses at any time to only pay for what is needed. The account manager uses a management interface in the web application to invite and add/remove account users and provide appropriate permissions to projects. Geospago offers a 30-day free trial with full functionality to make sure Geospago will meet the needs of the organization. Regular pricing beyond the trial is $34.99 license/month, with discounts offered for annual and bulk licensing options.
ANATUM: Does your product support disconnected editing, or does it require a Wi-Fi or cellular service connection?
Geospago:Geospago supports disconnected editing by synchronizing data between SQLite on the device and Amazon Web Services in the cloud. When a user roams outside connectivity’s reach, data creation and editing continue seamlessly on the device. When the user returns to connectivity’s reach, Geospago will automatically synchronize data in both directions to and from the device and cloud. Mobile application settings allows users to adjust how often to synchronize data while connected, as well as options for what data to exclude (such as photos) from synchronization if desired. In addition, Geospago includes a smart algorithm for network sniffing to save battery while working disconnected.
Geospago:Geospago employs Amazon Web Services in the cloud. Security features include username/password to access the mobile app and the web portal. SSL and advanced data encryption for data transfer from mobile to the cloud. Amazon security infrastructure for the cloud.
For additional licensing fees, Geospago may be deployed and hosted on a private network solution if desired.
ANATUM:Can users sync their data from the field so office coworkers can see new data, or have the office staff feed new project data to workers in the field?
Geospago:All data is synchronized between mobile devices and the cloud based upon connectivity and sync frequency options set in the application settings, making data edits available in near real-time to Geospago web application users, and if desired a public viewer application and desktop client software (i.e. QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth). Data filtering is also available through user permissions settings. Users may view and edit data via the mobile or web applications. Users may also collaborate on projects to share data between devices with every synchronization to eliminate overlap and duplication of effort in multi-collector project scenarios.
Data edits made through the web application on the cloud are synchronized to mobile devices with each synchronization. Likewise, changes to forms are also synchronized in real-time to devices allowing flexibility to make on-the-fly modifications to structured form data without compromising data integrity.
Data imported through the web application on the cloud are also synchronized to mobile devices to support scenarios for field editing existing data from external sources. Data formats for import may be CSV, TXT, or Zipped SHP.
Geospago:The Geospago mobile application uses Mapbox for the basemap map service. The Geospago web application allows the user to select between Mapbox and Bing services, allowing street map or aerial style basemaps. In addition, Geospago mobile can read custom created tile caches in Mbtile format as the basemap for the map component.
ANATUM: Does the mapping system require “checking out” a map or does it cache imagery for use in the field and working disconnected?
Geospago:To provide basemap information while disconnected, the Geospago mobile application allows users to switch the basemap to local tile caches in Mbtile format. Currently the tile cache must be created and copied to the mobile device beforehand. Future enhancements are planned to allow tile caches be synchronized with the cloud and made available to mobile devices as needed.
ANATUM: Does your program record points, lines, and polygons with the ability to customize data collection forms based on the paper datasheets they might normally utilize?
Geospago:Geospago allows point, line, and polygon creation via both drawing on the map and GPS tracking. Data creation and editing may be performed via both the Geospago mobile and web applications. Data collection forms are created via the Form Builder interface in the web application and includes various question types to meet all requirements, including select one, select many, text (with auto-complete suggestions), date, time, yes/no, number, images, bar code, and signature pad. Also available is a status, or state, question that allows data to be color-coded based upon the attribute values. Forms may be modified and synchronized while they are live and Geospago will make necessary adjustments to maintain data integrity in the database.
In addition, users are not limited to only one geometry type per form. When adding a geometry question to a form, the user can associate a point, line, polygon, any combination, or all, allowing the collector to represent the data in the field with the best geometry type at the moment. When the data is exported from the cloud to a format that only allows one geometry type per file, such as shapefile, the data is separated at export as needed.
ANATUM: Does your program record photos and video for attachment to GPS records? Can the User import an existing photo from the Camera Roll?
Geospago:Geospago provides an image question to be added to a collection form and allows multiple photos to be attached to each question. A film-stip style photo viewer is used to view the photos via the web application when viewing the details of the data. Photos are added both via taking a photo with the device or adding previously captured photos from the camera roll. Text descriptions may also be added for each photo.
ANATUM: Is there a search for feature or GPS record function?
Geospago:Geospago allows users to search for previously recorded records. Users may also use the GPS Track tool when collecting line or polygon data to create the feature by moving. Application settings allow users to set intervals for time or distance deltas while using the track tool.
Geospago also integrates the what3words service (www.what3words.com) to capture the w3w three-word address for point data collected with Geospago. This integration fabricates an alternative to offline geocoding when needed while providing a methodology for easy communication of location searching workflows.
ANATUM: Does your program have the ability to view the history of previously recorded field entries, or GPS records from other users?
Geospago:Geospago allows users to search and filter records previously recorded using a map or list view from both the mobile application and the web application. Users may view and edit recorded data for projects with the appropriate permissions applied. Planned future enhancements will provide an easy interface allowing project owners to resolve conflicts in the case of conflicting records from different users and select which version of the record wins.
ANATUM: Does your program have the ability to auto-generate ID numbers for records to help minimize incorrect labeling by the user?
Geospago:Geospago generates ID numbers for internal reference. The reference IDs are exposed to the user, but are not editable. The reference IDs are included with the data when exported from Geospago to external files or systems.
ANATUM: Is there a desktop interface that allows the user to see their projects and edit field-collected data?
Geospago:The Geospago web application is used to manage all aspects of the solution functionality and, like the Geospago mobile application, includes a map interface for creating, deleting, and modifying project data. All users have access to the web application with their account and can manage project data for which they have been granted permissions by the account manager. All data edits made with the web application are immediately queued for synchronization with the mobile applications, and vice versa. The Geospago web application includes basic reporting capabilities, including a streaming activity log for every project that records all actions performed in conjunction with a project. Enhanced reporting capabilities are on the solution road map and scheduled for Q3 of 2015.
In addition, Geospago has the ability to make project data available to desktop clients for viewing live data via web feature services (WFS) and network links. This allows desktop clients such as QGIS, ArcMap, and Google Earth to connect to the cloud server to view live project data with proper permissions.
ANATUM: Are there any particular features that you want to highlight?
Geospago:The Geospago solution’s biggest benefit is the speed and ease of deploying multiple field personnel to collect good data with no training. From account creation to data collection can literally be minutes. Forms can be created to support complex workflows and saved as templates to be reused as needed.
